Our experience with xParameters 3G

I had the chance to have a close look at Optimi’s xParameters solution for 3G, in order to see whether it could actually improve our system’s performance to the extent that their engineers were suggesting during their presentations.

Since the best way to assess something is to experience it yourself, during the last quarter of 2008 we integrated the solution in our network and decided to run a pilot project that would optimize automatically a set of key radio resource management parameters in 150 sectors located in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar.

Expectations were high, but I must say that the results were impressive on all fronts. The integration of the solution and the project execution ran smoothly and, at the end, we measured remarkable improvement in paramount KPIs, such as, for example, the dropped call rate for CS connections (which was reduced by more than 24%) and the Iub congestion rate (which was mitigated by more than 96%!).

Therefore, the solution did not only improve the network performance in a substantial manner, but also carried out this task in an automated way, which in my opinion has huge implications.

First, you can easily replicate the applied process all over the country, since the solution only requires a regular computer.

Second, the resulting configuration proves that there is significant room for improvement if key radio resource management settings are adjusted individually, i.e. on a per-sector basis.

And third, it finally seems that one of the most popular concepts nowadays (the so-called “self organized networks”, i.e. the SON concept that has been proposed for future next generation systems) is not only feasible but already available today for 2G and 3G networks when applying Optimi xParameters.
